Biography

One of the most promising young talents on the operatic international scene, Italian mezzosoprano Anna Pennisi was a member of Atelier Lyrique of Opéra National de Paris from 2011 to 2013.

As a member of Atelier Lyrique she has taken part in important productions such as Cerisaie by Fénelon, Le nozze di Figaro, L’Isola disabitata (Costanza) and Il mondo della Luna (Lisetta) at Opéra National de Paris. She has also held recital and concerts dedicated to Listz and Massenet at Amphithéâtre Bastille and a concert of Melodie italienne with Radio France. Other productions at Opera Bastille were La fanciulla del West (Wowkle), L’Italiana in Algeri (Zulma), La Traviata (Flora) and Die Zauberflöte (second woman).

She has worked with conductors such as Gianandrea Noseda, Nicola Luisotti, Evelino Pidò, Daniel Oren, Riccardo Frizza, Carlo Rizzi, Yves Abel, Giacomo Sagripanti, Matteo Beltrami, J. Lopez Cobos and John Neschling.

Her most important debuts include the roles of Dorabella in Così fan tutte, Romeo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Hermia in A Midsummer night’s dream (Stadttheater in Klagenfurt); Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro (Opèra de Toulon); Suzuki in Madama Butterfly (Teatro San Carlo di Napoli - Stadttheater in Klagenfurt - Opera di Roma, Terme di Caracalla - Teatro Nuovo di Spoleto); Fenena in Nabucco (Rete lirica Marche - Teatro Comunale di Mantova); Lola in Cavalleria Rusticana (Teatro Comunale di Mantova);  Maddalena in Rigoletto and Tisbe in La Cenerentola (Festival Internazionale di Stresa conducted by Gianandrea Noseda); Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia (Sao Paulo - Rio de Janeiro - Manaus under John Neschling); Fidalma in Il matrimonio segreto by Cimarosa; Carmen in La Tragédie de Carmen by Constant (Teatro Nuovo di Spoleto).

She has also performed as Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia (performances for the schools) and in La Carovana volante (mezzosoprano) at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, as Clotilde in Norma and as Azema in Semiramide at the Opéra de Lyon, as Clotilde in Norma at the Teatro de Champs-Elysées de Paris, as second witch in Dido and Aeneas at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence and Mercedes in Carmen at the Terme di Caracalla with the Teatro dell’ Opera di Roma.

In 2018 Anna Pennisi will sing again at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo as Enrichetta in I Puritani and as Mercedes in Carmen at the Terme di Caracalla. 

In 2019 will give her debut with the Glyndebourne Festival. 

Born in Acireale (Sicily) in 1982, she graduated at the Conservatory of Messina in 2004. Later she improved her technique and interpretation with Maurizio Arena, Bruna Baglioni, Renato Bruson, Franca Mattiucci, Enza Ferrari and Mark Bohemians.
